Who can become a sperm donor?

To become a sperm donor, you need to meet certain medical and health requirements. You will also undergo a thorough screening process before you can be approved as a donor. You need to:

  • Be between 23 and 45 years old.

  • Be physically and mentally healthy and have no known hereditary or serious diseases.

  • Have a BMI of no more than 35.

  • Have been smoke-free for at least three months before treatment begins.

As part of the screening process, you will be asked about your health, personal circumstances and reasons for wanting to donate sperm. We will also assess your psychological and social circumstances. The purpose is to ensure that donation feels right for you and that you are in a good position to complete the process.

How does it work?

Step 1. Apply

Submit an online application.

Step 2. Phone call with a donation coordinator
We will arrange a phone call where we ask questions about your health and your family’s medical history.

Step 3. Semen analysis
You will provide a semen sample at our clinic in Stockholm. We follow the WHO criteria for approved sperm donation.

Step 4. Meeting with a behavioural scientist
You will meet with a behavioural scientist for a consultation.

Step 5. Medical examination
You will meet with a doctor for an in-person medical assessment. During the appointment, blood samples will be taken to assess your general health and test for infectious diseases. We also perform genetic screening for common hereditary conditions and a karyotype analysis.

Step 6. Approval
If the screening process goes well and all test results are satisfactory, you will be approved as a donor.

Step 7. Donation
You can then begin donating sperm.

What do I receive as a donor?

Under Swedish law, donation must be altruistic. This means that you donate voluntarily, with the aim of helping someone else and without financial gain.

The financial compensation you receive is intended to cover your travel time and any loss of income associated with visits and travel to the clinic.

As a sperm donor, you will receive SEK 610 per approved donation. We encourage you to donate on several occasions.
