What is IVF (In vitro fertilization) with Donor Sperm

We offer high-quality IVF treatments with donated sperm and short waiting times to couples and single women who lack sperm. IVF with donated sperm can also be offered to women and couples where repeated inseminations with donated sperm have not previously been successful. Livio's clinics use sperm from our own Livio Sperm Bank and sperm banks in Denmark. This means we have very good access to high-quality sperm at all our clinics

Who is it for?

  • Heterosexual couples with reduced sperm production or unexplained infertility.
  • Same-sex couples and single women who lack their own sperm production.
  • Couples or women where repeated insemination or IVF treatments have previously been unsuccessful.

Your IVF Journey: step-by-step

Step 1:

Our prices

An IVF treatment is an individual process. Therefore, it is also difficult to estimate the total cost of treatment leading to a pregnancy. Within the Livio group, we strive to maintain as consistent pricing as possible, but the varying conditions at different clinics may sometimes result in slight price differences from clinic to clinic. Please feel free to consult us, and we will guide you!

Possible Side Effects of IVF with Donor Sperm

During the latter part of hormone stimulation, the abdomen may feel tense and tender due to enlarged ovaries. It's also common to feel emotionally affected during these days.

Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) occurs in 1-2% of IVF cases. Symptoms include abdominal swelling, pain, and difficulty breathing, usually appearing after embryo transfer. Treatment varies with severity, from rest and clinic monitoring to hospital care. There's an increased risk of blood clots, and blood-thinning treatment may be necessary. Pregnancy is not negatively affected.

The risk of OHSS has significantly decreased with shorter hormone stimulation (antagonist protocol). Today, all embryos can be frozen and transferred later in the woman's natural menstrual cycle or with simpler hormone stimulation, reducing risks for the woman while maintaining pregnancy chances.

IVF with Donor Sperm Treatment Frequently Asked Questions

IVF with Donor Sperm FAQs
Why can't I choose the donor myself?

By law, a patient is not allowed to choose the donor's characteristics themselves; the doctor does this. The donor's eye color, hair color, skin color, and body type are matched with the woman who will carry the pregnancy. If it's a couple undergoing treatment together, the donor is matched with the future parent who will not be carrying the child during pregnancy. This way, the child has the potential to resemble both parents.

How are the donors evaluated?

All our sperm donors are evaluated at Livio's clinics via Livio Egg and Sperm Bank. All donors are healthy, have no hereditary diseases in their family/relatives, have good sperm count, and are between 23 and 45 years old. A prospective donor is tested for several infectious diseases (including HIV 1 and 2, hepatitis B and C, HTLV I/II, and syphilis), and genetic screening is done to ensure the donor is not a carrier of any rare hereditary diseases.

How many children can a donor give rise to?

A donor can give rise to children in a maximum of six families in Sweden, and possibly siblings.

Is the donor anonymous?

The donor is anonymous to the couple, and the receiving couple or woman is anonymous to the donor. However, children born through donation have the right, when sufficiently mature, to find out the donor's identity. The donor has neither obligations nor rights towards the child. Information about the donor is kept for at least 70 years.

Why must one undergo a psychosocial evaluation?

The evaluation before donation treatment always includes a conversation with a behavioral scientist, where an in-depth psychosocial assessment is made and there's an opportunity to discuss the emotional aspect of undergoing egg donation where the child does not have a genetic connection to both parents. For most people, this is a good opportunity to raise questions, thoughts, and possible concerns about the treatment.
