What is PESA & TESA

PESA is primarily used for men with obstructive azoospermia, where there is a blockage in the vas deferens (e.g., due to scarring after infection or sterilization) that prevents sperm from entering the semen. In PESA, sperm are retrieved from the epididymis. TESA is usually used as a first-line method for men with non-obstructive azoospermia, where the problem lies in sperm production itself rather than in sperm transport. TESA involves retrieving sperm directly from the testicle through needle biopsies. Both PESA and TESA are performed under local anesthesia.

Who is it for?

  • For men suffering from azoospermia (absence of sperm in the semen), PESA or TESA can be a very effective treatment.

What are the benefits of PESA & TESA?

PESA/TESA are methods that give men with azoospermia an opportunity to have biological children by extracting sperm directly from the testicles or epididymis for use in IVF treatment with ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection).

PESA & TESA Treatment Frequently Asked Questions

PESA & TESA FAQs
What is the difference between TESA and PESA?

TESA takes tissue samples from the testicle, while PESA extracts fluid from the epididymis. PESA is mainly used when an obstruction in the vas deferens is suspected.

Are TESA and PESA painful procedures?

Both procedures are performed under local anesthesia, which minimizes pain during the procedure. Some tenderness may occur afterwards.

How high is the chance of finding sperm with TESA or PESA?

The chance varies depending on the cause of azoospermia. Your doctor can give a more accurate prognosis based on your individual situation.
