IVF with Donor Eggs
We offer high-quality egg donation treatments, short waiting times after evaluation, and world-class pregnancy results.
What is IVF (In vitro fertilization) with Donor Eggs
Egg donation is offered to couples and single women where the woman lacks or has severely reduced ovarian function. The reasons for this can be early menopause or when diseases, previous surgeries, or chemotherapy treatments have impaired ovarian function. Egg donation can also be an alternative when repeated IVF treatments have not resulted in pregnancy.
Who is it for?
Egg donation treatment can be offered to couples and single women where:
- The woman lacks or does not produce her own eggs.
- The woman is assessed to have a low chance of successfully becoming pregnant with her own eggs.
- When previous IVF treatments have not been successful.
What are the benefits of IVF with Donor Eggs?
At Livio, we recruit our own donors for egg donation through Livio Egg Bank. This means we have good access to eggs, which makes the waiting time between evaluation, matching, and treatment shorter than at other clinics. All of Livio's egg donors undergo thorough medical, psychosocial, and genetic evaluations before they are released for use.
Your IVF with Donor Eggs Journey: step-by-step
Evaluation
If you are a couple, both must come for a consultation with one of our doctors at the clinic. We will review your previous treatments and clarify that medical, psychological, and social conditions for treatment with egg donation are met. The woman should be of fertile age and not over 46 years old. Necessary blood tests are taken.
Psychosocial Assessment
Treatment may proceed if the future child is deemed likely to grow up under good conditions. According to Swedish law, the assessment includes a conversation with a behavioral scientist, where an in-depth psychosocial evaluation is made and there's an opportunity to discuss the emotional aspect of undergoing egg donation where the child does not have a genetic connection to both parents.
Matching with a Donor
According to Swedish law, a patient is not allowed to choose the donor's characteristics; the doctor does this. The donor's eye color, hair color, skin color, and body type are matched with the woman who will carry the pregnancy. If it's a couple undergoing treatment together, the donor is matched with the future parent who will not be carrying the child during pregnancy. This way, the child has the potential to resemble both parents.
Fertilisation
During fertilisation, egg cells from the donor are combined with fresh sperm from the man, which is provided on the same day the eggs are donated in the clinic's laboratory. In case of double donation, the retrieved eggs are fertilized with donor sperm. Fertilisation occurs using standard IVF or ICSI technique. The embryos are cultured to blastocysts and then frozen.
Embryo Transfer
Embryo transfer with a frozen and thawed embryo to the receiving woman occurs when her uterine lining is prepared. In many cases, more than one embryo can be frozen, and the others can be used later if needed. The recipient woman's treatment begins about three weeks before the embryo transfer with hormone tablets, and a few days before the transfer, hormone vaginal suppositories are added. This combination treatment continues for several weeks afterward.
Your funding options
In collaboration with Human Finans, Livio offers the possibility of advantageous loans and financing for your fertility treatment. For example, it is possible to take an interest-free loan for an IVF treatment and split the payment over 6 or 12 months.
You can contact Human Finans by phone at 08-560 201 15 or visit their website for more information and free advice.
Possible Side Effects of IVF with Donor Eggs
It's important to remember that if the recipient is somewhat older (e.g., over 40), pregnancy always carries a higher risk than at younger ages. In pregnancies with donated eggs, there's also a slightly higher risk of the pregnant woman developing high blood pressure and preeclampsia. These risks are carefully discussed during the medical consultation before treatment begins.
It should also be noted that the risk of numerical chromosomal abnormalities, which correlates with the age of the eggs used, can be significantly reduced through egg donation. A 40-year-old woman has a risk of about 1:100 for trisomy 21 (Down syndrome) with her own eggs, while the risk of trisomy 21 with donor eggs from 30-year-olds is reduced to the same level as for a 30-year-old (1:1000).

By law, a patient is not allowed to choose the donor's characteristics themselves; the doctor does this. The donor's eye color, hair color, skin color, and body type are matched with the woman who will carry the pregnancy. All our egg donors are evaluated at Livio's clinics via Livio Egg and Sperm Bank. All donors are healthy, have no hereditary diseases in their family/relatives, have good egg reserve, and are between 23 and 35 years old. A prospective donor is tested for several infectious diseases (including HIV 1 and 2, hepatitis B and C, HTLV I/II, and syphilis), and genetic screening is done to ensure the donor is not a carrier of any rare hereditary diseases.
A donor can give rise to children in a maximum of six families in Sweden, and possibly siblings.
The donor is anonymous to the couple, and the couple is anonymous to the donor. However, children born through donation have the right, when sufficiently mature, to find out the donor's identity. The donor has neither obligations nor rights towards the child. Information about the donor is kept for at least 70 years.
The evaluation before donation treatment always includes a conversation with a behavioral scientist, where an in-depth psychosocial assessment is made and there's an opportunity to discuss the emotional aspect of undergoing egg donation where the child does not have a genetic connection to both parents. For most people, this is a good opportunity to raise questions, thoughts, and possible concerns about the treatment.
