What is MicroTESE?

MicroTESE is the most advanced and successful method in reproductive medicine for identifying and retrieving sperm in men who lack sperm in their semen (azoospermia). After sperm have been aspirated, patients are prepared for a standard IVF treatment with ICSI.

Who is it for?

The method is used in the most difficult cases of male infertility where sperm has not been found using needle aspiration techniques (TESA or PESA). Azoospermia is defined as the absence of sperm in the ejaculate in at least two sperm sample analyses and occurs in 8 percent of infertile men, which corresponds to 1 percent of the male population.

What are the benefits of MicroTESE?

Annually, about 40 MicroTESE operations are performed at Livio. With this, Livio is the IVF group in Sweden with the most experience in the method..

Possible Side Effects of MicroTESE Treatment

MicroTESE Treatment Frequently Asked Questions

MicroTESE FAQs
What is MicroTESE and how does it differ from other methods of finding sperm?

MicroTESE is a new surgical technique where the testicle is opened and an operating microscope is used to find areas with sperm. Unlike older "blind" methods, with MicroTESE, the surgeon can see and select the best areas for taking samples.

Which men can benefit from MicroTESE?

MicroTESE can help men with non-obstructive azoospermia, which means they have no sperm in their semen due to problems with sperm production. It can be especially useful for men who have not had success with simpler methods like TESA or conventional TESE.

How high is the chance of finding sperm with MicroTESE?

According to a study conducted at Livio in Gothenburg, sperm could be found in 52% of cases with MicroTESE. This is a significant improvement compared to other methods, especially for men who previously could not have sperm extracted.

What happens after sperm is found with MicroTESE?

If sperm is found, it is used to fertilize eggs through a method called ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection). Embryos that develop can then be transferred into the woman's uterus. In the study, this led to pregnancy or birth in 34% of cases where embryos were transferred.

Are there any risks with MicroTESE?

As with all operations, there are certain risks. Studies show small risks (less than 4%) of bleeding or infection in the testicle. In rare cases, more serious complications can occur. However, it is important to note that follow-up studies have not shown any long-term negative effects on hormone production or testicular volume.
