IVF, also known as in vitro fertilization, is a method where eggs are fertilized outside the woman's body. The process involves hormone stimulation to produce multiple eggs, which are then retrieved and fertilized with sperm in the laboratory. One fertilized egg (embryo) are then transferred back into the woman's uterus. IVF can be used for various forms of infertility and gives many couples the opportunity to become parents.

If the woman has infrequent or absent ovulations, ovulation can be stimulated through tablet treatment or hormone injections. This way, there are good chances for the couple to achieve their longed-for pregnancy "on their own". The stimulations can be repeated several times to increase the chance of becoming pregnant. If pregnancy still does not occur, IVF is a possible next step.

Insemination is a fertility treatment where sperm is introduced into the woman's uterus during ovulation. This method can be used with either the partner's sperm (AIH - Artificial Insemination by Husband) or with donated sperm (AID - Artificial Insemination by Donor).
