What is Sperm Freezing

Certain medical conditions or treatments may involve or lead to a risk of reduced sperm production. Men who are about to undergo, for example, cancer treatment may experience long-term or permanent impairment of sperm production or ejaculation function. In such cases, we can offer sperm freezing. Later on, these can be used for insemination or in vitro fertilization. Examples of treatments that may reduce sperm function include chemotherapy and radiation therapy. The most common diseases where these treatments may be required are testicular cancer, malignant melanoma, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, and leukemia.

Who is it for?

  • Couples who cannot get pregnant on their own
  • Single women or same-sex couples who wish to become parents
  • Women with ovulation problems or damaged fallopian tubes
  • Men with reduced sperm quality or low sperm count
  • Couples with unexplained infertility
  • People with genetic diseases who want to avoid passing them on
  • Women of advanced age with decreased fertility
  • Couples where the woman has endometriosis, PCOS, or other gynecological conditions

The sperm freezing process

Freezing sperm is a relatively simple process. You will need to complete some screening blood tests and sign consent forms before coming in to the clinic, in accordance with British law. Blood tests (screening for HIV, Hepatitis B Core Antibodies, Hepatitis B Surface Antigens and Hepatitis C) can be done by your GP or privately. You will then need to abstain for 2-5 days before coming into the clinic to produce a sample. The sample will be frozen using advanced fast-freezing which allows frozen sperm to be stored for 10 years. Once frozen, the sperm can be thawed when you are ready to use it.

Our prices

An IVF treatment is an individual process. Therefore, it is also difficult to estimate the total cost of treatment leading to a pregnancy. Within the Livio group, we strive to maintain as consistent pricing as possible, but the varying conditions at different clinics may sometimes result in slight price differences from clinic to clinic. Please feel free to consult us, and we will guide you!
