Fertility Investigation
The first step before starting a fertility treatment is always to undergo a fertility evaluation. If you have been trying to have a child for a year (or 6 months if the woman is over 35), or if you lack sperm it is advisable to seek our help. You will have access to our team of IVF specialists, who will guide you safely through your evaluation and any further possible treatment options.
What is a fertility investigation
If a couple has been trying to have a child for a year (or 6 months if the woman is older than 35), it is advisable to seek help. The first step is to do a fertility assessment. All of our clinics within Livio offer fertility assessment. It is also possible to have a fertility assessment carried out by your local gynecologist and then contact us. Our ambition is for an assessment to be completed within one month of the first visit.
During a fertility assessment, the woman's ovarian capacity (ultrasound + AMH) and the man's sperm count and quality are analyzed. The most appropriate treatment method for the best possible result can then be recommended. Which form of treatment is most suitable is discussed in dialogue with each couple. Consideration is given to how long the infertility has lasted, the underlying cause, and the woman's age. For couples where the woman is young – under 30 years old – there is in most cases a good chance of pregnancy for several years to come, while women approaching 40 have a short time.
Fertility tests for women
Gynecological examination and ultrasound
Hormone analysis (blood test)
If necessary, the fertility investigation is supplemented with an ultrasound-guided hysterosalpingography (HSSG). This is charged separately.
We check that the woman is ovulating normally, which is done with a vaginal ultrasound and sometimes with a hormone test (Progesterone). The woman can also check herself if and when she is ovulating using ovulation strips. Blood tests to check thyroid function (TSH, free T4) and ovarian capacity (AMH) are also taken. If the woman has irregular menstruation, additional hormone tests may need to be taken. Hysterosalpingography (HSSG) may need to be done as a supplement if indicated.
Fertility tests for men
The man's sperm is analyzed for number and motility. Men who have few or poorly motile sperm should be further examined with an external examination and hormone tests and chromosome analysis.
In a few men, there are no sperm at all in the semen (azoospermia). This may be due to severely reduced sperm production or to outflow obstructions in the epididymis or vas deferens.
An outflow obstruction may be congenital or acquired during life, such as after sterilization, external violence or epididymitis. Thanks to in vitro fertilization with microinjection technique (ICSI), there are now opportunities to help men with azoospermia become biological fathers. The method requires only a few sperm taken from the epididymis or testicles to fertilize the woman's egg.
Our prices
An IVF treatment is an individual process. Therefore, it is also difficult to estimate the total cost of treatment leading to a pregnancy. Within the Livio group, we strive to maintain as consistent pricing as possible, but the varying conditions at different clinics may sometimes result in slight price differences from clinic to clinic. Please feel free to consult us, and we will guide you!
